SeaWorld Jumps to the Rescue of Wayward Dolphin
Orlando, FL (June 28, 2007)

On June 27, SeaWorld Orlando's dedicated animal rescue team jumped in to relocate a young female dolphin had become stranded in a shallow creek off Turnbull Bay, near the New Smyrna Beach municipal stadium. SeaWorld staff veterinarian Scott Gearhart said the dolphin swam into the creek during high tide more than a week ago but couldn't make its way back to Florida's Intracoastal Waterway, possibly because the water was too shallow.

SeaWorld's 12-person rescue team successfully relocated the 8-foot animal along the Intracoastal Waterway in New Smyrna Beach. The dolphin was fitted with a satellite transmitter and its progress will be monitored by researchers from the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute.

The elaborate operation used three boats, two Yamaha WaveRunners, and due to the limited access to the creek, a local resident's 16-foot pontoon boat, proving that our animal rescue team will go to any lengths, and use every resource at their disposal, to help our aquatic friends in need.

SeaWorld veterinarian Scott Gearhart said the dolphin was in generally good health. "We're optimistic that she'll be fine," he said.
